Q2 Client Conference Call, When to get Defensive?

During our spring conference call, we discussed the stock market returns YTD as well as a few things to look for that would trigger us to become defensive. Paticularily, will corporate earnings actually come in for 2014 as analysists project? What other signs would we look for as a reason to become defensive?
